Eli Houston Murray
Eli Houston Murray (born February 10, 1843 in Cloverport , Breckinridge County , Kentucky , † November 18, 1896 in Bowling Green , Kentucky) was an American politician ( Republican Party ).
Career
During the civil war he achieved the rank of brigadier general . He then completed his law degree at the University of Louisville . He married Evelyn Neal and worked as a US marshal and newspaper editor. President Rutherford B. Hayes appointed him territorial governor of the Utah Territory in 1880 . During his tenure, he confirmed the election of Allen G. Campbell as a delegate to Congress , which, however, never took his seat there. George Q. Cannon , a leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a polygamist , received over ten times the number of votes. Murray's attacks on Mormons stretched beyond the borders of Utah and influenced national politics on polygamy. President Hays appointed Murray for a second term, but was removed from office by President Grover Cleveland in 1886 .
Murray worked as a journalist in San Diego , California until his return to Kentucky . The city of Murray in Salt Lake County was named after him.
