John Shaffer
John Wilson Shaffer (born July 5, 1827 in Lewisburg , Union County , Pennsylvania , † October 31, 1870 in Salt Lake City , Utah ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ).
US President Ulysses S. Grant appointed him governor of the Utah Territory in March 1870 . He held the office until his sudden death on October 31, 1870. During his brief tenure, he abolished every law that appeared to the federal government to be a rebellion . This was true of the Mormons in general . His strict approach resulted in a conflict with other officials in Utah.
