J. Bracken Lee
Joseph Bracken Lee (born January 7, 1899 in Price , Utah , † October 20, 1996 in Salt Lake City , Utah) was an American politician ( Republican Party ), who was governor of the state of Utah from 1949 to 1957 .
Life
Early years
Lee graduated from Carbon County High School . He then joined the US Army and served there during the First World War , where he last held the rank of sergeant . After the war he was involved in real estate and insurance. He was the Mayor of Price, Utah for six years. During this time he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US Congress and for the office of governor of Utah.
Governor of Utah
However, he won the gubernatorial elections in 1948 and 1952. As governor, Lee was known for his opposition to federal income taxes . In addition, some of the highway expansion was expanded as a result of rising petroleum taxes while personal income taxes were lowered. He was named National Chairman of "For America" in 1957 , a group that opposed super-internationalism and sought a "return to the constitution ."
Another résumé
In 1958 he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US Senate . The following year he bought the Republican weekly Utah Statesman and renamed it American Statesman . In 1960 he was elected mayor of Salt Lake City, where he worked until his resignation in 1971.
Lee was married twice, to Nellie Amelia Pace and Margaret Ethel Draper. The first marriage resulted in one child and the second three.
