history
Abraham Powell and Caleb Baldwin Rhoades, both trappers from Salem , arrived in this area in 1877 and built a log cabin. This first hut was the starting point for today's Price. The place grew very quickly after the discovery of coal in the 1880s. The railway, which was built here with a connection to the coal mines in 1883, also brought a very big change. Before Price was a small isolated farming community and has now become an active trading post. Butch Cassidy and his gang often came to town to get supplies. In 1897, Cassidy stole the Pleasant Valley Coal Company's payroll . Price was named after the Price River (discoverer William Price (1869)).
