Michael Okerlund Leavitt (born February 11, 1951 in Cedar City , Utah ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ). He was the 8th Secretary of Health in the United States from 2005 to 2009 .

Private

Leavitt holds a bachelor's degree in economics and economics from Southern Utah University . He is married to Jacalyn Smith and has five children. Leavitt is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons).

Career

He was the 14th governor of Utah from 1992 and was re-elected twice until 2000. He resigned from his governorship on November 5, 2003, only to be sworn in as the 10th head of the Environmental Protection Agency a day later . Previously, on August 11 of the same year, he was proposed for office by George W. Bush and confirmed by the Senate on October 28, 2003 with a vote of 88: 8. He was also a member of the Homeland Security Advisory Council (about: Homeland Security Advisory Council ).

President Bush nominated him on December 13, 2004 as the new Secretary of Health after Tommy Thompson . It was confirmed on January 26, 2005 by an acoustic vote by the Senate. With the end of Bush's term in office in January 2009, Leavitt also left the cabinet .
