Lee Muller Thomas (born June 13, 1944 in Ridgeway , Fairfield County , South Carolina ) is an American manager and former administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

biography

After attending school, he studied psychology at the University of the South , where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts ( BA Psychology ) in 1967 . He then completed postgraduate studies in education at the University of South Carolina in 1970 with a Master of Education (M.Ed.).

He then worked for the city council of Ridgeway, before moving to the state service of South Carolina in 1972, where he was first director of the Office of Criminal Justice Programs until 1977 . Between 1979 and 1981 he was Director of the Department for programs of public security ( Division of Public Safety Program ). During this time he was also the chairman of the National Criminal Justice Association .

In 1981 he switched to government service and initially served as Associate Director for State and Local Programs and Assistance at the Federal Emergency Management Agency . In 1983, he joined the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and was assistant to the solid waste and incident response administrator. In 1985 Thomas, who is also a member of the Republican Party , was appointed administrator of the EPA himself and headed this agency until the end of the term of office of US President Ronald Reagan in 1989.

Following Thomas moved to the private sector and was initially Chairman and CEO of Law Companies Environmental Group Inc. In 1993, he entered the service of the company Georgia-Pacific , one of the world's largest manufacturer and marketer of pulp , tissue , cardboard , paper , packaging and cellulose-based Building materials ( plywood , plasterboard ). Initially he was Senior Vice President for Environmental and Government Affairs and then Executive Vice President for Paper and Chemicals between 1997 and 2000 . He was then Executive Vice President of Consumer Products before becoming President of Georgia-Pacific in 2000. As such, he was briefly responsible for building materials and sales in 2002 and then from 2003 to 2005 as Chief Operating Officer (COO).

In 2006 he became a member of the Board of Directors of the timber and real estate company Rayonier , of which he has been President, Chairman and CEO since 2007. He was also a member of the Boards of Directors of Airgas , the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta , the Regal Entertainment Group , the Alliance for Climate Protection , the American Forest & Paper Association and the World Resources Institute .
