Regal Entertainment Group is the second largest cinema chain in North America (USA and Canada) after AMC Entertainment . In 2017, the company operated a total of 7,322 screens at 560 locations in 45 states, Washington, DC, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands.
The Knoxville, Tennessee- based group was formed in 2002 when billionaire Philip F. Anschutz ( Anschutz Entertainment Group ) bought several smaller chains that went bankrupt in the mid-1990s after the multiplex cinema boom ended. Today, Anschutz owns the majority of the company's shares. In early December 2017, the British cinema chain Cineworld agreed to take over the three times larger Regal Entertainment for a price of 3.6 billion dollars, creating the world's second largest cinema operator behind AMC Entertainment. In March 2018, the company was taken over by the British cinema chain Cineworld .
The Regal Entertainment Group operates its cinemas under several brands, the largest of which are
- Regal Cinemas ,
- Edwards Theaters and
