Philippe Duron (born July 19, 1947 in Antony , Département Seine ) is a French politician . He is a member of the Socialist Party and was mayor of Caen ( Lower Normandy ). From 2004 until his election as mayor, he was President of the Regional Council of Lower Normandy.

biography

After graduating from college, Duron first became a history lecturer , then a teacher at the Lycée . He began his political career at the age of 36, when he was appointed municipal council in Louvigny is selected. There he also became mayor in 1989 . In 1997 he was elected to the French National Assembly, of which he was a member until 2001.

He ran for the office of mayor of Caen in the local elections in 2002 , but was defeated by the Socialist Party of the UMP and its top candidate Brigitte Le Brethon . After he took over the chairmanship of the party in the Calvados department in 2004 , he managed to unite the left-wing parties in the Basse-Normandie region . Since March 28, 2004 he has been President of the Regional Council of the Basse-Normandie Region.

In the elections to the National Assembly on June 17, 2007, he won the constituency of Caen-West against the mayor and challenger Brigitte Le Brethon . On November 8, 2007 he was nominated as the top candidate of the united list of the left Caen en Capitales for the local elections in Caen. In the first ballot on March 9, 2008, his list got 44%, Brigitte Le Brethons 35.5%. His list won the second ballot with 56.26%, compared to 43.74% for the UMP.

On April 3, 2008, he was replaced in the position of President of the Regional Council of Lower Normandy by Laurent Beauvais PS . His term of office as Mayor of Caen ended on April 5, 2014 with the handover to his elected successor, Joël Bruneau of the UMP.
