AMC Entertainment Inc. is a global cinema operator. A merican M ulti- C inema, 38% part of the Chinese Wanda Group since May 2012 , has been the industry leader in the USA since the acquisition of the Carmike Cinemas Inc. chain at the beginning of March 2016, currently with around 8,400 cinema screens.

In Germany AMC is represented by its subsidiaries United Cinemas International .

history

The company is headquartered in Kansas City , where the company was founded in 1920. Approx. 20,000 employees work full and part time for AMC. Other movie theaters are located in Great Britain, Hong Kong, Mexico and France.

In 1995, AMC Entertainment opened the first megaplex in Dallas . By the end of September 2015, AMC Entertainment owned 348 cinemas with 4937 screens in the USA. Approx. 200 million visitors were received in the AMC cinemas annually.

On May 21, 2012, it was announced that the Chinese Wanda Group had bought AMC Entertainment for $ 2.6 billion. This enabled the Chinese to secure access to around 5,000 of around 40,000 screens in US cinemas. The Wanda Group is chaired by Wang Jianlin .

With the acquisition of the Carmike cinemas in 2016 for 1.1 billion dollars (including liabilities of 360 million dollars), around 20% of American cinemas now belong to the Chinese Wanda Group. In the same year, AMC bought the English cinema chain Odeon & UCI at a price of 921 million pounds (1.21 billion dollars) and, due to Brexit , 160 million dollars cheaper . Odeon & UCI was previously owned by Private Equity Terra Firma Capital Partners . The company owns 242 cinemas with 2236 screens in England, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Spain ( Cinesa ) and Portugal. The transaction was completed in November 2016. With now 627 cinemas and more than 7600 screens, the Wanda Group has become the largest cinema operator in the world.
