Regina A. "Gina" McCarthy (born May 3, 1954 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American expert on environmental health and air pollution . From July 2013 to January 2017, she headed the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Life

McCarthy studied anthropology at the University of Massachusetts in Boston; after completing her bachelor's degree in 1976, she completed a master’s program at Tufts University in 1981 .

She worked for the State Department of Environmental Protection and until 2004 in the administration of the state of Massachusetts.

From 2009 McCarthy was Deputy Head of the EPA; in July 2013, she was appointed director under US President Obama . Her term ended on January 20, 2017, the day Donald Trump took office as US President . Trump nominated Scott Pruitt was her successor from February 17, 2017 to July 6, 2018.

Private

McCarthy is married with three children.
