Robert Joseph "Bob" Miller (* the 30th March 1945 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party and was from 1989 to 1999 Governor of the State of Nevada .

Life

Miller's family moved from Chicago to Las Vegas , Nevada in 1955 and attended Bishop Gorman High School there , which he graduated in 1963. He then studied political science at Santa Clara University and received a BA in 1967. In 1971 he was awarded the degree of Juris Doctor by the Loyola Law School of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles .

From 1967 to 1973 Miller served first in the US Army Reserve and later in the US Air Force Reserve . At the same time he was from 1971 to 1973 assistant district attorney for Clark County . He then was until 1973 head of the legal department of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. From 1975 to 1978 he was a justice of the peace in Las Vegas . In 1979, Miller was elected Clark County Attorney General. He won re-election in 1982, becoming the first Clark County attorney to be re-elected. In 1986 he resigned from this office and was elected lieutenant governor of Nevada the following year . He held this position until 1989, when he was elected governor of Nevada. Miller held the post of governor until 1999. He is still the governor of Nevada who has been in office the longest. He was the last Democratic governor of the state until Steve Sisolak was elected in 2018.

After retiring as governor, he worked as a lawyer in Las Vegas until 2005.

Miller is married with three children. He currently lives in Henderson , Nevada.
