Stephen F. "Steve" Sisolak (born December 26, 1953 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin ) is an American entrepreneur and politician of the Democratic Party . He has held the office of governor of Nevada since January 7, 2019 .

Career

Sisolak is from Milwaukee , Wisconsin , USA , where he graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1974. Subsequently, in 1978 earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Nevada . He then settled permanently in this state. After starting his professional life, he worked as an entrepreneur, most recently as co-owner of a manufacturer of various goods such as pencils and coffee cups. As a member of the Democrats, he was also politically active and was elected to the Clark County Commission for his party in 2008 . This office, which Sisolak assumed in January 2009, corresponds roughly to a district council mandate in Germany . The county mainly includes the city of Las Vegas . In early 2013, Sisolak was elected Chairman of the County Commission . Immediately afterwards, he was traded as a possible candidate in the 2014 gubernatorial elections, but turned it down. 2017 then declared his bid for the office of governor in the upcoming elections in November 2018. In the democratic primaries that took place in June 2018 , Sisolak clearly prevailed against several competitors with around 50% of the vote. In his election campaign, he called for more investment in education and infrastructure as well as an improvement in the health system. He also wants to strengthen small and medium-sized businesses. Sisolak said he would not accept the governor's salary and would instead donate it to charity. In the gubernatorial election on November 6, 2018 , Sisolak triumphed over Republican Adam Laxalt , the previous Attorney General of Nevada, with just over 49% of the vote. 45% of voters were in favor of Laxalt. He took office as head of government of the western state on January 7, 2019, replacing Republican Brian Sandoval . When he was sworn in, Sisolak was the first democratic governor of Nevada since 1999. Immediately after his election victory, Sisolak announced that he wanted to focus more on reforming the education system and pushing the issue of gun control; so there should be better background checks on gun buyers. The citizens of Nevada had already spoken out in favor of such a measure in the course of a referendum in 2016. He also wants to legalize cannabis and regulate and tax sales. The additional income gained from the taxation of cannabis is to flow partly into the education system. On the other hand, the consolidation of the state budget is one of Sisolak's priorities.
