Frank Bell
Francis Jardine "Frank" Bell (born January 28, 1840 in Toronto , Ontario , † February 13, 1927 in Oakland , California ) was an American politician and governor of the state of Nevada from 1890 to 1891 .
Early years
Francis Bell was a distant cousin of Alexander Graham Bell , who is considered a co-inventor of the telephone. He attended public schools in his Canadian homeland. In 1858 he came to Nevada and managed the national cabling for the new telegraph technology until 1860. After that he was an employee of the telegraph company and was one of the group of people who telegraphed the Constitutional Constitution of Nevada to Washington, DC in 1864. He was the first person to demonstrate the phone in Nevada.
Political career
Bell became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1883 and 1887 he served as the head of the Nevada State Prison. From 1889 he was lieutenant governor of this state. When Governor Charles Clark Stevenson died on September 21, 1890 , Bell had to end the term of office as his deputy. In this case, this included the period up to January 5, 1891. During this time, he essentially continued the policy of his predecessor. He was the first non-US-born governor of Nevada.
After his time as governor, he was again head of the state penal institution between 1893 and 1895. From 1905 to 1909 Bell was a justice of the peace in Reno . He died on February 13, 1927. He had two children with his wife, Mary Poore.
