Maude Frazier

Maude Frazier (born April 4, 1881 in Sauk County , Wisconsin , †  June 20, 1963 in Las Vegas , Nevada ) was an American politician . She was lieutenant governor of the state of Nevada in 1962 and 1963 .

Career

In 1905 Maude Frazier graduated from Stevens Point State Teachers College , which later became the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point . Then she began a long career in school service. Until 1906 she worked as a teacher in Wisconsin. She then moved to Nevada, where she worked as a teacher at various public schools in the western and southern parts of this state until 1921. In 1921 she became Deputy State Superintendent of Public Education . In this role she was responsible for around 3,000 students and 150 teachers in four districts in southern Nevada. From 1927 to 1946 she headed the Las Vegas School District.

After her retirement, Maude Frazier embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1951 and 1962 she was a member of the Nevada Assembly . There she headed the education committee. In 1955, she was instrumental in a reform of the Nevada school system that reduced the number of school districts in her state from over 200 to 17. After Lieutenant Governor Rex Bell's death , she was appointed as his successor by Governor Grant Sawyer, despite her advanced age . She held office for about six months between 1962 and January 1963. She was Deputy Governor and Chair of the State Senate . She died in Las Vegas on June 20, 1963.
