The Nevada Senate ( Nevada State Senate ) is the upper house of the Nevada Legislature , the Legislature of the State of Nevada .

The Chamber of Parliament is made up of 21 senators who are elected in single-person constituencies from 2012–2021, with half of the senators being elected every two years for a four-year term.

Between 2002 and 2011, these were elected in 19 multi-member constituencies. Each constituency currently has around 128,000 residents. The term of office is limited to three terms (12 years).

The Senate Chamber and Assembly are located in the Legislature Building next to the Nevada State Capitol in the capital, Carson City .

Tasks of the Senate

As in the upper houses of other states and territories, as well as in the US Senate , the Nevada Senate has special tasks compared to the House of Representatives that go beyond legislation. It is the responsibility of the Senate to confirm or reject nominations by the governor in his cabinet, other executive offices, commissions and authorities.

Structure of the chamber

The President of the Senate is the acting Vice-Governor . He only takes part in votes in order to bring about a decision in the event of a stalemate. In the absence of the Vice-Governor, the respective President presides over the plenary sessions pro tempore . This is elected by the majority parliamentary group in the Senate and later confirmed by the Chamber. Current vice governor and Senate president is the Republican Brian Krolicki , president pro tempore of the Democrat Michael A. Schneider from the Clark County .

Composition of the Chamber (Jan 2017)

Before the November 2016 election, Republicans had an 11-10 majority, and after the election, Democrats had an 11-10 majority. As a result of this election result, Republican Senator Patricia Farley changed her party affiliation to independent, with the intention of voting with the Democrats.
