Slovenské Ďarmoty (Hungarian Tótgyarmat ) is a municipality in central Slovakia . It is located in Juhoslovenská kotlina at the confluence of the rivers Krtíš and Ipeľ on the border with Hungary (Balassagyarmat). The closest Slovak cities are Veľký Krtíš (15 km) and Šahy (30 km).

View from the west

The municipality was established in 1919/20 after the collapse of the Kingdom of Hungary , when the border between the newly formed Czechoslovakia and Hungary was established on the Ipeľ River. It was formed from the northern part of Újtelep and the Iliašov and Cerina settlements of the Hungarian city of Balassagyarmat .

From 1938 to 1945 it was once again part of the city of Balassagyarmat as a result of the First Vienna Arbitration when southern Slovakia came to Hungary . Since 1993 the municipality is part of today's Slovakia. Border controls ceased to exist in 2007 when Slovakia and Hungary joined the Schengen area .

The municipality part of Iliašov also belongs to the municipality (first documented mention was in 1323 as Elyasfolua ). There is a church in the village, which is dedicated to Saint Emmerich , from 1993.

Population structure

The population has a Slovak majority (79.1%) compared to the Hungarian (19.2%), Roma and Czech (both <1%) minorities. 81% and 15% of the inhabitants stated that their denominations were Roman Catholic or Protestant .
