Čelovce (up to 1927 Slovak "Čeľovce"; Hungarian Csall or Csal ) is a municipality in the south of Slovakia with 427 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It belongs to the Okres Veľký Krtíš , a district of the Banskobystrický kraj .
geography
The community is located on the south-eastern edge of Krupinská planina (German about "Karpfener Hochebene") in the valley of the Čelovský potok , in a hilly landscape. The highest point of the municipality is the hill Senná hora ( 537 m nm ). The center of the village lies at an altitude of 346 m nm and is 25 kilometers from Veľký Krtíš .
Neighboring municipalities are Cerovo in the north, Opava in the east, Seľany and Širákov in the south-east, Ďurkovce and Vinica in the south, Hrušov in the south-west and Plášťovce and Drienovo in the west.
history
Čelovce was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1260 as Chol (according to other sources not until 1295 as Chal ), at that time as a property of the medieval Hunt-Poznan dynasty . At the beginning of the 14th century the village was owned by the Dobak dynasty , in the 16th century it became the dominion of the Čabraď castle . The 16th and 17th centuries were marked by repeated Turkish raids. In 1828 there were 135 houses and 823 inhabitants who were employed as farmers and fruit growers.
Until 1918/1919, the place in Hont County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census lived in Čelovce 438 inhabitants, of which 418 Slovaks , three Roma , Czechs and Ukrainians and two Magyars . Nine residents did not provide any information on ethnicity .
305 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, 76 residents to the Evangelical Church AB and five residents to the Orthodox Church; one resident professed a different denomination. 23 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 28 residents was not determined.
