Želovce (1973–1980 Slovak "Žeľovce"; Hungarian Zsély ) is a municipality in the south of Slovakia with 1215 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It belongs to the Okres Veľký Krtíš , a district of the Banskobystrický kraj .
geography
The municipality is located in the Ipeľská kotlina basin , a subunit of the Juhoslovenská kotlina , on the right side of the Krtíš in the Ipeľ catchment area , near the Hungarian border . The center of the village is at an altitude of 154 m nm and is nine kilometers from Balassagyarmat (H) and eleven kilometers from Veľký Krtíš .
Neighboring municipalities are Sklabiná in the north, Olováry in the northeast, Kiarov in the east, Vrbovka in the southeast and Záhorce in the south and west.
history
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1327 and developed from an older Slavic settlement. Initially it belonged to the estate of the Hont Castle , later to that of the Divín Castle . From 1554 to 1593 the village was occupied by the Turks. In 1828 there were 124 houses and 885 inhabitants who were employed in agriculture and viticulture.
Until 1918, the place in Neograd County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. On the basis of the First Vienna Arbitration Award , he was again in Hungary from 1938 to 1944.

According to the 2011 census, Želovce had 1,331 inhabitants, including 1,063 Slovaks, 175 Magyars, three Czechs and two Roma; three residents were of a different ethnicity. 85 residents did not provide any information. 1,088 residents confessed to the Roman Catholic Church, 67 residents to the Evangelical Church A. B, three residents each for the Evangelistic Church and the Greek Catholic Church and one resident each for the Apostolic Church and the Orthodox Church; three residents were of other denominations. 71 residents had no denomination and 94 residents had no denomination.
