The Florida Senate ( Florida State Senate ) is the upper house of the Florida Legislature , the legislature of the US state of Florida .

The Chamber of Parliament is composed of 40 senators, each representing an electoral district. The senators are each elected for four-year terms; there is no limit to the terms of office. Typically, all senators in the odd districts are elected in years divisible by four, with the US presidential election. The senators in the even-numbered districts are elected in the Florida election. In the years that end with a two, all senators are elected. The senators in the odd boroughs were elected for a two-year term in 2002. The senators in the even-numbered districts will be elected for a two-year term in 2012.

The Florida Senate and House of Representatives both cater to the size of the population in the geographic area. Although there are exactly three times as many MPs in the House of Representatives (120) than in the Senate (40), the Senate districts are not made up of three representative districts. The borders are independent.

The Senate boardroom, along with the House of Representatives, is located in the Florida State Capitol in the capital, Tallahassee .

Tasks of the Senate

As in the upper houses of other states and territories as well as in the US Senate , the Florida Senate has special tasks compared to the House of Representatives that go beyond legislation. It is the responsibility of the Senate to confirm or reject nominations by the governor in his cabinet, other executive offices, commissions and authorities.

Structure of the chamber

The President of the Senate is not the Vice-Governor , as is usual in the USA , but an elected member of the Chamber of Parliament. Current Senate President is Republican Mike Haridopolos , 26th constituency, and pro tempore President Michael S. Bennett .

The Republican Andy Gardiner , 9th constituency, was elected as the majority leader ; Opposition leader ( minority leader ) is the Democrat Nan Rich , 34th constituency.
