Minnesota Senate
The Minnesota Senate (Minnesota State Senate) is the upper house of the Minnesota State Legislature , the Legislature of the State of Minnesota . The Senate Boardroom, along with the House of Representatives, is located in the Minnesota State Capitol in the capital, Saint Paul .
Tasks of the Senate
As in the upper houses of other states and territories, as well as in the US Senate , the Minnesota Senate has special tasks compared to the House of Representatives that go beyond legislation. It is the responsibility of the Senate to confirm or reject nominations by the governor in his cabinet, other executive offices, commissions and authorities.
Structure of the chamber
The House of Representatives consists of 67 Senators, which is half as many as the other House , the Minnesota House of Representatives . Each of the electoral districts in the Senate includes the A and B districts of Representatives; B. Senate District 32 consists of Districts 32A and 32B of Representatives. The Minnesota Constitution forbids dividing a District of Representatives into a Senate District. Before the 1960s, the senators were divided between the counties , with the result that they were underrepresented in the cities. The senators are usually elected for four-year terms. However, there is an exception when the electoral districts are reallocated after a census . Then they are elected for a two-year term.
From Minnesota's admission to the Union until 1972, the Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota was the President of the Senate. That year, voters approved a constitutional amendment that would allow the Senate to elect its own president from among its members by January 1973.
