Lewis Rice "Broadhorns" Bradley (born February 15, 1805 in Orange County , Virginia , † March 21, 1879 in Elko , Nevada ) was an American politician and governor of the state of Nevada.

Early years and political advancement

Lewis Bradley attended public schools in his home in Virginia. He then worked in the cattle trade and as a mule dealer. After traveling from Missouri to California , he settled in Elko County in Nevada around 1862 . He previously served in the California State Assembly for one term in 1861 .

Governor of Nevada

In 1870 Bradley was elected as the Democratic Party candidate for governor of Nevada, with 53.9 percent of the vote against Frederick Augustus Tritle . He took up his new office on January 2, 1871. After being re-elected in 1874, he could remain in office until January 6, 1879. In 1878, his attempt at re-election narrowly failed: with a share of 48.7 percent of the vote, he was defeated by Republican John Henry Kinkead . During his tenure, the prison system was reorganized and the University of Nevada was founded.

After his election defeat in 1878, Bradley retired from politics. He died just weeks after the end of his term and was buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Elko. Governor Bradley was married to Virginia Hode Willis, with whom he had three children.
