Kultur Shock is a multinational band based in the United States .

history

Kultur Shock was founded in 1996 in Seattle . The founder and singer of the band is Srđan "Gino" Jevđević (American spelling: Srdjan Yevdjevich), who already made a career as a pop star with his band Gino Banana in Yugoslavia . Together with Mario Butković ( guitar ), who also comes from Bosnia , he came to the USA due to the turmoil of the war over Bosnia. Born in Bulgaria, Val Kiossovski (guitar) came to the USA as a political refugee in 1991 and has been with the band since 2000. In addition to Jevđević and Kiossovski, the current line-up includes the Americans Chris Stromquist ( drums ), Guy Davis ( electric bass ), Amy Denio ( saxophone and clarinet ) and Paris Hurley ( violin ).

Kultur Shock's first albums were released by Billy Gould's independent label KoolArrow Records . The band's albums have been released on their own label Kultur Shock Records since 2007 ( Live in Europe ) . In March 2014 the band started a crowdfunding campaign to enable the production of their 9th album. The album was released in early 2015, but was made available for free on Soundcloud a few months beforehand .

style

The music of Kultur Shock combines elements of punk , new metal , latin , funk and fusion jazz with the influences of music from the Balkan region . For example, their first album Live in America featured the Bosnian folk song Moj dilbere , a Sevdalinka , and the Roma love song Djelem, djelem . The band members refer to their music as Balkan punk .

Jevđević's lyrics are often humorous and political and reflect his anarchist worldview. He sings in English , Bosnian , Spanish ( Mano Mi Hermano on We Came to Take Your Jobs Away ), Bulgarian ( Duna on We Came to Take Your Jobs Away ) and German (in the chorus of House of Labor on Ministry of Kultur ).
