Charles C. Stevenson

Charles Clark Stevenson (born February 20, 1826 in Phelps , Ontario County , New York , † September 21, 1890 in Carson City , Nevada ) was an American politician and governor of Nevada from 1887 to 1890 .

Early years and political advancement

Charles Stevenson attended public schools in Canada and Michigan . In 1859 he went to Nevada and worked as a miner, miller and in agriculture . As an elected MP for Storey County , he served three terms in the Nevada Senate and was then elected Rector of the University of Nevada . He held this post for eleven years. In 1872 and 1884 he was a delegate to the respective Republican National Conventions . In 1885 he was chairman of the Nevada Silver Convention . In 1876 he had represented his state at the Philadelphia Exhibition of the Century .

Governor of Nevada

In 1886, he was elected governor of Nevada as a member of the Republicans . Stevenson took up his new office on January 3, 1887 and held it until his death on September 21, 1890. During this time, the Stewart Indian School was founded, the University of Nevada was reformed, railroad construction continued and programs to support ranchers and farmers developed. Charles Stevenson was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland . He was married twice and had two children in total. His brother Edward was Governor of Idaho Territory from 1885-1889 .
