Jim Douglas
James H. "Jim" Douglas (* 21st June 1951 in Springfield , Massachusetts ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ) and former Governor of the State of Vermont .
Douglas graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Middlebury College , Middlebury . He studied Slavic Studies . In November 1972 he was elected as a member of the Vermont House of Representatives, to which he was a member until 1979. Then Douglas was Secretary of State of Vermont from 1981 to 1993 and Treasurer of that state from 1995 to 2003 .
In 2002 he succeeded in the gubernatorial elections in Vermont, the victory over the Democratic lieutenant governor Doug Racine , whereupon he succeeded Howard Dean in the office of governor, who did not run. In 2004 , 2006 and 2008 he was confirmed in office; Besides New Hampshire, Vermont is the only state in which governors have two- instead of four-year terms. Douglas chaired the National Governors Association from 2009 to 2010 .
In August 2009, Douglas announced that he would not run again in the 2010 election. He was succeeded on January 6, 2011 by the Democrat Peter Shumlin , who defeated the Republican lieutenant governor under Douglas, Brian Dubie .
