Born in Connecticut like many other later Vermont leaders, he moved to Vermont in 1775. During the American Revolutionary War , he distinguished himself militarily at the Battle of Bennington in 1777.

His close connection to the ruling elite was already evident from the fact that he married Mary Chittenden, the daughter of Thomas Chittenden , who was considered the leading politician in Vermont beyond the borders of the state. Galusha was an active member of the Baptist Church and worked in various administrative and judicial offices in the late 18th century. In 1808 he acted in the election of the US President as Vermont's elector , who supported the election of the Democratic Republican James Madison .

Already in the following year Galusha was elected governor of his home state, leaving the previously incumbent governor Isaac Tichenor behind. He held this office until 1813, before being outdone in the election by his brother-in-law, supporter of the Federalist Party, Martin Chittenden . But as early as 1815, Jonas Galusha succeeded in making his comeback to governorship by winning the elections over the younger Chittenden, which he now held until 1820.

Like most wealthy politicians of his era, Jonas Galusha reached a comparatively old age. Galusha died at the age of 81 on September 24, 1834 and was buried in his place of residence.
