In April 2012, Shumlin hit the international headlines for a curious and daring act when he met four bears in front of his home in Montpelier, who were sitting in a tree in front of his house, helping themselves at the birdseed in the feeder and thereby the politician woke up. When he bravely went out, grabbed the dispenser and fled back inside, one of the larger bears followed him.

Shumlin later stated in the press that "One of the bigger bears got interested in me." “He was probably less than six feet away when I slammed the door. Then he ran away. “He learned something from it, said the 56-year-old. "If you still want to feed the birds at this time of year, take the feed dispenser off at night."
