William W. Stickney
William Wallace Stickney (born March 21, 1853 in Plymouth , Vermont , † December 15, 1932 in Sarasota , Florida ) was an American politician and governor of the state of Vermont from 1900 to 1902 .
Early years and political advancement
William Stickney attended the Black River Academy and the Phillips Exeter Academy . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in Ludlow in his new profession. In this city he was also a school councilor. Politically, Stickney was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1882 and 1892 he was employed in the administration of the Vermont House of Representatives . From 1882 to 1884, and again from 1890 to 1892, Stickney was District Attorney in Windsor County . He was then a member of the House of Representatives from Vermont between 1892 and 1896. He was even elected President of the House.
Governor of Vermont and another résumé
In 1900, Stickney was elected governor of his state against the Democrat John H. Senter . He took up his new office on October 4, 1900. During his two-year tenure, the borders with the neighboring state of Massachusetts were finally determined. Governor Stickney also advocated the abolition of the tax officer. After the end of his tenure on October 3, 1902, Stickney initially devoted himself to his private and business interests. In addition to his work as a lawyer, this also included his involvement in banking and insurance. In 1924 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention , at which his cousin, President Calvin Coolidge , received his party's nomination for re-election. In 1926 he administered the property of Coolidge's father. In the same year he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US Senate . William Stickney died in Florida in December 1932.
