Charles Herbert Joyce (born January 30, 1830 in Andover , England , † November 22, 1916 in Pittsfield , Vermont ) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1883 he represented the first constituency of the state of Vermont in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Joyce was born in the English county of Hampshire and immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1836. The family settled in Waitsfield, Vermont. Charles attended Northfield Academy and Newbury Seminary . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1852, he began to work in his new profession Northfield . He also worked as a State Librarian for the Vermont State Government for two years .

Between 1857 and 1858 Joyce was a district attorney in Washington County . During the Civil War , he was a major in the U.S. Army and a lieutenant colonel in a Vermont volunteer unit. After the end of the war he worked as a lawyer again.

Politically, Charles Joyce was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1869 and 1871 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Vermont ; from 1870 he was president of this chamber. In 1874 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first district of Vermont , where he succeeded Charles W. Willard on March 4, 1875 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete a total of four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1883 . In 1882 he decided not to run again. After his tenure in Congress, Joyce returned to working as a lawyer in Rutland. Then he retired to Pittsfield, where he spent his old age. He died in November 1916 and was buried in Rutland.
