Career

After primary school, Augustus Young studied law. After his admission to the bar in 1810, he began his new profession in Stowe . In 1812 he moved to Craftsbury . There he was also politically active in the 1820s. Between 1821 and 1832 he was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives several times, with a few interruptions . From 1824 to 1828, Young served as the district attorney in Orleans County ; between 1831 and 1832 he was a judge at a probate court. He was a member of the Vermont Senate from 1836 to 1838 . Politically, he joined the Whig Party in the 1830s .

In the congressional election of 1840, Young was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington in the fourth district of Vermont , where he succeeded John Smith on March 4, 1841 . Since he turned down another candidacy in 1842, Young could only hold one term in Congress until January 3, 1843 . This was overshadowed by heated discussions between his party and US President John Tyler , who was actually also a member of the Whigs, but increasingly distanced himself from them.

After his tenure in Congress was over, Young returned to practice as a lawyer and turned to literary affairs. In 1847 he moved to St. Albans. From 1851 to 1854 he was an associate judge in the Franklin County District Court . Augustus Young died on June 17, 1857 in St. Albans.
