The county borders Canada in the north and has an area of 1792 square kilometers, of which 142 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Orleans County , Lamoille County , Chittenden County , Grand Isle County, and Brome-Missisquoi, Canada.

The county had a population of 45,417 as of the 2000 census . There were 16,765 households and 12,188 families. The population density was 28 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.06% white, 0.30% African American, 1.51% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.02% residents from the Pacific island area and 0.21% from others ethnic groups; 1.64% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.59% of the population.
Of the 16,765 households, 37.70% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 58.40% were married couples living together, 9.90% were single mothers. 27.30% were not families. 20.60% are single households and 8.40% have someone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.08.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 28.10% of residents under the age of 18, 7.00% between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.40% between 25 and 44 years of age, and 22.50% between 45 and 64 years of age 11.00% were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.50 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 95.90 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 41,659 , and the median income for a family was $ 46,733. Males had a median income of $ 32,009 versus $ 24,078 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,816. 9.00% of the population and 7.00% of families are below the poverty line. 10.40% of them were under 18 years of age and 10.30% were 65 years of age or older.
