Sheldon is a town in Franklin County of the state of Vermont in the United States with 2190 inhabitants.

geography

Geographical location

Sheldon is in the north of Franklin County, near the border with Canada , about 20 kilometers east of Lake Champlain in the Green Mountains . The Missisquoi River flows in a westerly direction through the town, from the south the Black Creek flows into the Missisquoi River. Some small streams also run through the town. There are only a few, small lakes. The surface is slightly hilly, the highest point is the 271 m high Sheldon Hill

The Grant for Sheldon got on August 18, 1763 as part of the New Hampshire Grants Samuel Hungerford, as well as other land speculators. The town was first named Huberford after Hungerford . Hungerford sold his stake to another speculator named Field. This bought even more shares and sold all shares in Colonel Elisha Sheldon of Salisbury , Connecticut , a veteran of the American Revolutionary War . Colonel Sheldon and his sons Elisha Junior, George and Samuel moved to Vermont around 1789, more settlers followed and the town was renamed Sheldon in 1792.

The Sheldons were active in town and state politics. Colonel Sheldon and Elisha Sheldon were elected selectmen at the constituent assembly of the town and Samuel Sheldon was elected to the town clerk and later to the Justice of Peace, as well as MPs in the Vermont House of Representatives.

A railroad stop in Olmstead Falls, known as Sheldon Springs since 1884, became a tourist spot. After the main hotel was destroyed in a fire set by a disgruntled employee, tourism declined.

The Vermont Route 105 runs from west to east of Swanton in the west to the east Enosburg. It follows the course of the Missisqoui River. From it branch off in a northerly direction from Vermont Route 78 to Highgate, Vermont Route 120 to Franklin and Vermont Route 236 to East Franklin.

Public facilities

The Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans is the closest hospital for residents of the Town.

education

Sheldon is part of the Franklin Northwest Supervisory Union with Franklin, Highgate and Swanton . The Sheldon Elementary School provides for more than 350 children school classes from pre-kindergarten to eighth grade.

The Sheldon Municipal Library is located on Main Street in Sheldon.
