Geographical location

Highgate is located in northeast Franklin County on the east bank of Lake Champlain and on the border with Canada . The largest lake in the town's area is the centrally located Cutler Pond . The Missisquoi River runs along the southern boundary of the town. It flows into Lake Champlain. In 1943, a nature reserve, the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge , was created in the Missisquoi River delta . Numerous small streams drain the town, they initially flow in a north-easterly direction into the Rock River, which then flows in a south-westerly direction into Lake Champlain. The area of ​​the town is hilly, with no significant elevations. The highest is the 222 m high Rice Hill .

Highgate was founded on August 17, 1763 by Benning Wentworth under the New Hampshire Grants . The grant went to Samuel Hunt and 63 other land speculators, none of whom settled in Highgate. He named the area after Highgate in north London . The first settlers were German soldiers who had served on the side of the British Army in the American War of Independence . The town was surveyed in 1805 by John Johnson.

Today Highgate is an agricultural center, in which, in addition to various meat and vegetable producers, in particular milk producers and the largest chicken farm in Vermont with 100,000 animals have settled.

The Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge is a National Wildlife Refuge in the mouth of the Missisquoi River. It is the only wildlife refuge that is exclusively located in the state of Vermont. It was placed under the protection of the Migratory Bird Conservation Act on February 4, 1943 . At that time it comprised 6.4 km² of land on the estuary delta including the islands of Shad Island and Big Marsh Slough . In the following years more land was added, today the area covers 27 km², which is distributed between the towns of Swanton and Highgate. It is home to the largest colony of the great blue heron in Vermont.

Highgate is part of the Franklin Northwest Supervisory Union with Franklin, Sheldon and Swanton . The Highgate Elementary School provides for more than 350 children school classes from pre-kindergarten to sixth grade.

In addition, a high school for around 1,000 students, the Missisquoi Valley Union Middle & High School , continues through to 12th grade. Colleges and universities are available in the surrounding communities. The nearest colleges are approximately 30 kilometers away in Plattsburgh, New York and Colchester ; the University of Vermont is located in Burlington, about 60 kilometers away .

The Highgate Library was founded in 1897. Until a fire destroyed the building in 1940, she was housed in the Town Clerk's office in the Town Hall. After the Town Hall was rebuilt in 1941, she moved there again and later shared the premises with the Historical Society. On April 6, 2017, the library and the Historical Society moved into new premises and the name was changed to Highgate Library and Community Center .
