Geographical location
Fairfield is located in the middle of the Green Mountains , about 30 kilometers from the Canadian border, in central Franklin County. The largest lake in the Town area is Fairfield Pond in the northwest. The Clack Creek flows through the town with its tributaries in a northerly direction and flows into the Missisquoi River at Sheldon . The area of the town is hilly, the highest point being the 449 m high Pine Hill .

The parish has two major settlement centers, Fairfield and East Fairfield , but the other areas of the area are also widely populated by scattered farms.

history
The place was founded on August 18, 1763 by Benning Wentworth in the course of colonization by the British and under the New Hampshire Grants released for land acquisition. Samuel Hungerfort and others received the grant. On the same day Hungerford , today's Sheldon and another place Smithfield were founded. Smithfield was split between Fairfield and Bakersfield that same year . The community was named after the city of the same name in Connecticut , from which some of the new settlers came. Settlement began in March 1788 and the town's first settler was Joseph Wheeler. The town's constituent assembly took place in March 1790.
At the first census in 1791, Fairfield had 125 residents; by 1850 the number rose to 2500. The 2010 census showed a population of 1891. The main sources of income for the population are traditionally agriculture - Fairfield is an important agricultural center of northeastern Vermont - and forestry. Tourism is almost unknown in this region.

Economy and Infrastructure
traffic
In a west-east direction Vermont Route 36 runs from St. Albans in the west to Bakersfield in the east through the town. There is no Amtrak station in Fairfield. The next is in St. Albans.
Public facilities
The Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans is the closest hospital for residents of the Town.
education
Together with St. Albans, Fairfield belongs to the Franklin Central Supervisory Union. The Fairfield Center School offers school classes from kindergarten through eighth grade.
The Bent Northrop Memorial Library was founded in 1987. It goes back to a gift from Consuelo Northrop Bailey in memory of her father, Bent Northrop. Mary Northrop Wallis, sister of Consuelo Northrop Bailey, the first lieutenant governor of a state in the United States, bequeathed her books to the library. The library received another generous donation from Dr. Winston and his wife Frederika Northrop Sargent.
