Jeptha Bradley

Jeptha Bradley (born December 31, 1802 in Fairfield , † June 8, 1864 in St. Albans , Vermont) was an American lawyer and politician who was State Auditor of Vermont from 1860 to 1864 .

Life

Bradley was born in Fairfield, Vermont. He studied law and was admitted to the bar, after which he practiced law in Franklin County and Grand Isle Counties . As a member of the Whig Party , he was sheriff of Franklin County from 1835 to 1839 .

Bradley moved to St. Albans and served in various public offices. He was a justice of the peace and also a high bailiff. He was appointed inspector of the United States Customs Service at Alburgh Station in 1845 , and Bradley was appointed postmaster at Highgate Springs in 1847 .

Bradley was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the United States and served as a delegate to the Church's annual meetings in 1822 and 1850.

In 1844 Bradley received a patent for an improved air heating oven.

Bradley was a co-founder of the Horticultural Society for the Valley of Lake Champlain in 1850.

In 1849 Bradley was elected a probate judge. He held this office until 1850. He was also active in the probate court from 1850 to 1852 and again in 1854.

When the Republican Party was formed in the 1850s , Bradley became a member of the party. In 1860 he was elected a State Auditor. He held this office until his death. Jeptha Bradley was married to Sarah Bradley (1804-1896). The couple had a son. Bradley died in St. Albans on June 8, 1864. His grave is in Greenwood Cemetery in St. Albans.
