Dugald Stewart (politician)

Dugald Stewart (born September 26, 1821 in Middlebury , † March 23, 1870 ibid) was an American lawyer, businessman and politician who was State Auditor of Vermont from 1864 to 1870 .

Life

Stewart was born in Middlebury, Vermont to Ira Stewart and Betsey Hubell Stewart. His brother was the governor of Vermont John Wolcott Stewart . He graduated from Middlebury College in 1842, then studied law and was admitted to the bar.

Instead of working as a lawyer, Stewart sought a career as a businessman. He worked from 1848 to 1855 as an accountant and purser for the Rutland and Burlington Railroad. Stewart was a clerk at the Addison County Court from 1855 until his death . Stewart was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1860 to 1862 . He also held various public offices, including as justice of the peace .

During the Civil War , Stewart served in the Vermont National Guard in the Judge Advocate General Corps, United States Army 1st Brigade with the rank of First Lieutenant.

As a member of the Republican Party , Stewart was named State Auditor in 1864. He held this office until his death in Middlebury on March 23, 1870. His grave is in Middlebury West Cemetery.

Dugald Stewart was married to Sophia Chloe Allen Stewart (1836-1922). The couple had three children.
