David Pierce (politician)

David Pierce , also David Pierce, Jr. , (born March 26, 1786 in Southboro , Massachusetts , † August 16, 1872 in Woodstock , Vermont ) was an American lawyer and politician who was State Auditor of Vermont from 1823 to 1844 .

Life

Pierce was born in Southboro, Massachusetts to David and Sarah Pierce. He grew up in Barnard , Vermont.

He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1811 . He then worked from 1811 to 1812 at the Royalton Vermont Academy in Windsor County, Vermont as a teacher and also studied law with Charles Marsh . He was admitted to the bar in 1816 and practiced law in Woodstock, Vermont.

Pierce was interested in inventions and other scientific pursuits. Items for which he held a patent included a gold separator and a planer.

In 1823, Pierce, who was a member of the Whig Party, was elected State Auditor. He held this office until 1845.

Pierce was appointed a civil court judge in 1836 and held that office until 1846.

David Pierce's first marriage was on October 5, 1817, Ruth Downer on October 5, 1817. The couple had two sons. After the death of Ruth Downer Pierce in 1833, he married Mary S. Gardner (1804–1871) for the second time. He had a son with his second wife. Pierce died in Woodstock on August 16, 1872.
