E. Henry Powell

E. Henry Powell (born September 3, 1839 in Richford , Vermont , † May 4, 1911 in Burlington , Vermont) was an American veteran of the Civil War , lawyer and politician who was State Auditor of Vermont from 1878 to 1892 .

Life

Edward Henry Powell was born in Richford, Vermont. He attended the school in Richford, then the Potsdam Academy in New York and the New Hampton School in Fairfax . After this training, Powell worked as a teacher while continuing to attend school.

In 1860 Powell began studying at the University of Vermont , which he pursued until the beginning of the Civil War. When the war broke out, he was drafted into the 10th Vermont Infantry Regiment as a private . This was followed by a promotion to first sergeant. In 1863 he passed a selection process and was nominated by a promotion committee as an officer in the United States Colored Troops . He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of the 10th United States Colored Troops and served in that unit until the end of the war. After the Civil War ended in 1865, the 10th United States Colored Troops continued to serve in Texas as part of another brigade, and Powell acted as a brigade commander there.

After his retirement, Powell returned to Vermont, studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1866.

A member of the Republican Party , Powell served as a federal customs inspector for Franklin County from 1866 to 1869 . Then from 1872 to 1874 he was District Attorney for Franklin County. He was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1874 to 1876 and a member of the Vermont Senate from 1878 to 1880.

In 1878 Powell was elected a State Auditor. He held this office until 1892.

Powell was a founding member of the Richford Savings Bank & Trust Company in 1874 and was its president.

He moved to Burlington, Vermont in 1892 when he accepted the position of treasurer at the University of Vermont. In 1892 he was also elected to the Board of Directors of the Burlington Trust Company.

E. Henry Powell's first marriage was to Ellen G. Rowell. This connection resulted in two children: Blanche Powell, who married William A. Spring, a dentist from Dresden , and Max Leon Powell, later President pro tempore of the Vermont Senate. After the death of his wife Ellen, he married Georgiana Reed Bailey, the widow of George W. Bailey , Vermont Secretary of State, who died in office . From this marriage the children Thomas Reed Powell and Gertrude Reed Powell were born.

Powell died in Burlington on May 4, 1911. His grave is in Burlington Lakeview Cemetery.
