architecture

Church exterior

The late Gothic massive church building under a steep tiled roof that is hipped to the east with the main construction phase from 1418 to 1450 has stepped buttresses and pointed arch windows and until 1450 also includes the northern pointed arched and barred side portal. The southern shoulder arched and crossed side portal was built around 1510. Both side portals received polygonal vestibules in 1848. The former Gothic choir was replaced from 1712 to 1719 with a reconstruction according to the plans of the architect Jakob Prandtauer with a baroque two-bay choir the width of the nave and a flat triangle. The choir in the western yoke, free of buttresses, was extended like a transept to the depth of the buttresses of the nave. The late Gothic west tower with tracery windows from the 15th century that are only visible from the attic of the nave shows a change of location and was redesigned in 1712 in the Baroque style with a bell storey, clock gables and a lantern bulb hood. The tower ground floor received a round arched tower portal with an iron plate door in 1792 and, like the side portals, received a rectangular vestibule with finely layered side wall openings in 1848. Chapel extensions are aligned in the corners of the tower, in the south presumably Gothic in the core, with presumably a former function as a charnel house. On the north side of the chapel extension is a high war memorial with a relief of Christ Carrying the Cross by the sculptor Josef Schagerl senior (1923). On the south wall of the church is a wall painting of Christ on the Mount of Olives from the 16th century. There are also two painted sundials, one marked 1695, one with God the Father from the 3rd quarter of the 18th century. There are three early baroque tombstones as figuratively designed inscription plates.

Church interior

The monumental three-aisled hall church impresses with a choir of the same width and a gallery set on three sides. The four-bay nave comprises a west wall with a gallery and a north wall from the construction period 1418/1450 and a south wall and the vault on octagonal pillars around 1510. The vault shows grid-like coffered ribs with diamond accents and partially broken approaches in the central and south aisles. The northern row of pillars was converted into dividing arches . The north aisle shows a lower, denser and more irregular rib network, which is provided with painted coats of arms, and runs up against the north wall in a six-part wall sequence. The three-sided gallery from the construction period around 1418/1450 with a coffered parapet on pillar arcades is vaulted under cross ribs on the west side and open in the central nave with pointed arch arcades. The longitudinal galleries from the 1st half of the 16th century are vaulted under the groin and open in a round arch and were extended to the east in 1848 by two arched axes. The three triumphal arches at the transition from the nave to the choir have a late Gothic profile. The hall-like choir is vaulted with a groin vault on slim square pillars and pilasters. The sacristy attached to the choir has a baroque groin vault on both floors, a late Gothic iron plate door and two lava niches with shell decoration. The groin-vaulted tower ground floor from the 2nd half of the 13th century is open on four sides, the openings to the side chapels show pointed arch arcades. The two-bay chapels on the side have barrels of needle caps on belts on pilasters. There are 12 stucco consecration crosses from 1689 and 1719. The neo-Gothic stained glass Maria and Christ carrying the cross were created by the glass painters CH Burkhardt and A. Ferstl (1859). The glass painting Herz Mariä und Herz Jesu was created by the Mayer'sche Hofkunstanstalt in Munich (1893). The figural stained glass in the side tower chapels was created by the Karl Knapp company from 1955 to 1957.

Rococo pulpit

The high altar, consecrated in 1785, is a monumental early classicist double column retable based on a design by the architect Andreas Zach and the execution by the sculptor Simon Reindl with the statues Augustine, Andreas, Jakobus and Karl Borromeo, with a halo with angels in the front gable area and the Tempietto tabernacle with eucharistic scenes as a relief in the base area. Handing over the keys to St. Peter painted Carl Frister (1783). The left late baroque side altar as a columned retable with volute excerpt from 1764 bears the statues Judas Thaddäus and Johannes Evangelist and shows the altar leaf Death of St. Anna and the upper picture St. Barbara, both by Martin Johann Schmidt (1763). The right side altar in the same design from 1762/1763 bears the statues Ferdinand and Leopold and shows the altar leaf Death of St. Joseph and the upper picture St. Katharian, both by Franz Xaver Wagenschön .

The pulpit around 1760 with a free-standing entrance door shows the oval relief of the Baptism of Christ, twelve-year-old Jesus in the temple and the sermon of John the Baptist between evangelist figures, and bears the group of figures Good Shepherd with angels on the sound cover. There is a crucifix in baroque shapes. The sculptor Otto Moroder created a crucifix (1955) and a Maria Immaculata (1957) for the tower side chapels . There are canvas prints Baptism of Christ and Noli me tagere from the 3rd quarter of the 17th century. Andrea Celesti painted the canvas picture Annunciation at the end of the 17th century. The 15 Stations of the Cross are from 1734.

The late baroque organ with a Rückpositiv was created by Ignaz Gatto the Younger (1792). After a reconstruction of the organ (1884) the organ was restored with Gerhard Hradetzky (1980).
