Josef Schagerl senior

Josef Schagerl senior (born January 29, 1872 in Scheibbs ; † February 7, 1953 there ) was an Austrian sculptor and master carver .

life and work

Schagerl came from Fürteben, Scheibbs municipality, and began to carve as a schoolchild. Through the mediation of Probst Urlinger from Scheibbs, he did an apprenticeship as an altar carpenter with Josef Kepplinger in Ottensheim near Linz from 1886 to 1890 . After 3½ years he left as a master craftsman and returned to his parents on the Buchberg in 1890.

He then went to Innsbruck to the church sculptor Dominikus Trenkwalder , where he worked as an assistant until May 1893. He came back to his parents. Gustav Bamberger from Gut Zehethof got him a place at the Vienna School of Applied Arts , which he attended from 1893 to 1898. In the meantime he already had orders for church furnishings and from private individuals.

However, he went on a journey that took him via Passau , Nuremberg and Münster to Westphalia , where he lived from 1898 to 1903 and worked in a sculptor's workshop . In 1903 he came back to the Erlauftal and built a studio with his own hands in the attic of his parents' house. He now received further commissions and created many beautiful works of art for churches and for private individuals in the near and far, which can still be seen today.

In 1912/13 he created an altar crib with 25 larger-than-life figures for the Kapuzinerkirche Scheibbs , the only large Christmas crib in Austria. For the chapel at the Resslbauer / Jagesberger in Vorderburgstall he created the Trinity altar with 6 figures in 1921. The last work he created in 1953 was the statue “Our Lady of Fatima” for the Krenn family chapel in Scheibbsbach. In total, Josef Schagerl created several hundred works of wood and stone during his lifetime.

His son Josef Schagerl junior is also a sculptor, he was married to his wife Rosa, née Haselsteiner.
