The Scheibbs monastery church , which is consecrated to Saint Barbara , is located on Kapuzinerplatz in Scheibbs, Lower Austria, and is the second Catholic church in the Scheibbs parish, next to the parish church . It forms an ensemble with the associated monastery, which today houses a boarding school and a nursing school. Both high altar and both side altar paintings are by Kremser Schmidt .

history

Scheibbs has been a parish since 1322, and in 1338 Duke Albrecht II donated the Scheibbs market to his favorite foundation, the Carthusian Monastery of Gaming . Thus Scheibbs became the secular administrative center of the monastery rule and the castle its center. But it was not until 1677 that the Carthusian Order began to work in Scheibbs in spiritual terms. For this purpose, a Capuchin monastery and the associated church of St. Barbara were built in front of the former northern city gate, the Wienertor, outside the city walls in the years 1678–1684.

Due to a lack of priests in the order, the Capuchin monastery and parish had to give up in 1995. From 1938 to 1939 Cardinal Franz König was a chaplain in Scheibbs .

The outer

The monastery and church show the designs that are mandatory for this order. The simply structured church facade, however, immediately identifies the church as a Capuchin church for those in the know .

A beautiful portal made of local marble leads to a sober barrel-vaulted hall with a square choir. On the west side there is a side chapel in honor of the father of the order, Francis of Assisi .

The furnishings from the late 18th century are simple and unpretentious, but in a rare cohesion. There is no marbling to be seen on the baroque wooden altars and gilding can only be found in the area of the tabernacle . In place of the gold z. B. a chalk setting on the capitals of the columns. The antependia of the altars are adorned with beautiful inlays. It is precisely through this design that the entire church space exudes a certain warmth.

The high altar picture shows the decapitation of St. Barbara , the church patroness , who probably owes her election to the fact that the church is located in the Eisenwurzen area. The upper picture shows the coronation of Mary by the Holy Trinity , and the pictures of the side altars the Saints Anthony of Padua and Sebastian . All pictures mentioned come from the workshop of Martin Johann Schmidt , also known under the name Kremser Schmidt .

From 1912 to 1913, the sculptor Josef Schagerl senior created the last large altar crib in Austria for the Scheibbs monastery church with 21 larger-than-life figures.

The organ of the St. Barbara monastery church was built in 2010 by the Hague organ building workshop Pieringer using the historical case by Max Jacob. It has 17 stops on two manuals and a pedal .
