Herrgottschnitzer is the traditional name for a professional wood carver in the southern German and Austrian language areas , who predominantly produces works with Christian -religious motifs. An alternative spelling is Herrgottsschnitzer .

The name goes back to the novel "Der Herrgottschnitzer von Ammergau " by Ludwig Ganghofer . In Val Gardena South Tyrol , carving has been the main line of business in many families since the 17th century. See sculptors in Val Gardena .

In terms of professional law , the profession of Lord God Carver is the trade “wood sculptor” and belongs to the training profession wood sculptor. Around 30 to 40 wood sculptors are trained in Germany every year.
