Dominikus Trenkwalder (born April 22, 1841 in Angedair , † July 7, 1897 in Wilten ) was an Austrian sculptor .

Life

The son of a glazier and small farmer was interested in sculpture, but first learned the miller's trade. From 1857 he did an apprenticeship as a sculptor with Michael Stolz in Innsbruck, which he broke off after his father's death in 1860 to help out at home. From 1862 to 1864 he worked in the Mayr'schen Kunstanstalt for church work in Munich with Josef Knabl , then again with Michael Stolz. With grants from the Ministry of Culture and the Tyrolean estates, he undertook study trips to Vienna between 1867 and 1873 , where he worked in Josef Gasser's studio  , Munich and Italy. After a short stay in Rome  , he settled in Wilten (today a district of Innsbruck) in 1876 , where he ran a large workshop with many students. There he created numerous neo-Gothic altars and statues in marble and wood for churches throughout Tyrol and Vorarlberg , as well as grave monuments for cemeteries in Innsbruck, Wilten and Lienz , where he repeated successful works for various clients. Trenkwalder also worked as a restorer, among other things for the door inlays in Ambras Castle and, together with Franz Xaver Spörr , in the Pill parish church . He worked several times with his brothers Josef, Alois and Matthias, who also worked as cabinet makers and altar builders. Among his students were Franz Kobald and Alois Winkler .

Dominikus Trenkwalder was a bachelor all his life and, as a devout and practicing Catholic, devoted himself intensively to the sacred motifs in the then modern neo-Gothic style in the exercise of his sculpture. He is buried in the Wilten cemetery in Innsbruck. A street was named after him in the Innsbruck district of Höttinger Au .
