Strassen is a municipality with 796 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the district of Lienz (East Tyrol) in the state of Tyrol ( Austria ). The community is located in the judicial district of Lienz .

geography

Strassen is located in the Pustertal on the alluvial cone of the Thurnbach, which flows into the Drau . The municipality is formed by several hamlets, all of which are north of the Drava.

Community structure

The municipality of Strassen consists of a single cadastral municipality or locality of the same name . Strassen is a large, scattered settlement that is partly in the valley floor and partly on a sunny slope. It consists of only a few individual farms, but nine hamlets (fractions / districts):

Parts of Bach, Tassenbach and Hof are also south of the Drau.

The names of the groups either indicate their situation or reveal the past. Example:

Fronstadel - Herrenstadel , probably the lord's subordinates lived here;

Hintenburg - behind the castle. Tradition reports that there was an old castle on the Jakobihügel, but no relevant finds are yet available.

Only a few farms have this mountain location: Bannholz, Fronholz, Egger and the farms in the Fronstadel fraction. The highest farms are Gatterer and Planitzer at 1450  m above sea level. Both church members belong to the Tessenberg parish.

The Strassen and Messensee fractions on the main road form the core of the community. The primary school, the municipal office, the Trinity Church and the Widum are located here.

There are some hereditary farms among the approximately 170 inhabited houses in the community. In the vast majority of cases, the living quarters and bird feeders are assembled in such a way that the bird feeder is on the north side. In the fractions located in the valley floor, there has been a lot of construction activity in recent years. Many new single-family houses were built.

The legend reports that in Roman times the slope of the valley floor in front of Strassen (Heisinger Höhe) did not yet exist and therefore one could see unhindered from Sillian to the area of ​​today's Abfaltersbach. In this former plain there was the large and rich Roman settlement called Messa . A Roman milestone found on the main road and the name Roman tunnel indicate this.

The legend also tells of the downfall of Messa due to a terrible catastrophe, probably in the 12th century. In the Hintenburgertal, a large lake - the Messensee - broke through the damming after a particularly snowy winter and after a sudden thaw, and covered and destroyed Messa with enormous masses of gravel. The mighty cone of rubble at Heisinger Höhe was created in this way. As a result of the eruption, a reservoir would have been formed from the yard towards Jungsbach. The lake is said to have been very rich in fish. In 1305 there is an annual record of 2,000 fish (Otto Stolz). From around 1400 the lake is no longer reported. The water was able to drain away, the lake slowly dried up. Geological soil samples, the name Möser-Wiesen towards Jungsbach and a view down from the Dorfberg clearly confirm the mudslides that have taken place and the hollow of the reservoir in the valley. In any case, after Messa, the name Messensee was the ultimate village name. The oldest document in the local archive from February 6, 1453 says “Chapel of St. Jakobus in Messensee ”.

The coat of arms awarded by the Tyrolean state government on October 8, 1985 shows

"Divided by blue and black by a silver oblique left wavy bar, in the black field a silver scallop shell."

With the curved silver stripe it symbolizes the name of the community and reminds of St. Jakobus , church patron of the parish, with the blue field on the former Messensee.

Employers in trade and industry are: Tischlerei Wieser, Josef Mayr Carpenter, Franz Bodner MR, Installations Troyer, Slaughterhouse Erwin Aichner, Nordpan Rubner Holzbauelemente GmbH.

Tourism and the hospitality industry are also important branches of the economy . In addition to the three large hotels and inns, there are numerous private room rentals, holiday apartments and a campsite.

Strassen is connected to the railway network with the cupsbach stop and the Abfaltersbach train station of the Drautalbahn . In Tassenbach the road branches off to Kartitsch and further into the Lesachtal, here the Gailbach also flows into the Drau.
