Otto Moroder (born January 29, 1894 in Ortisei in Val Gardena , † July 27, 1977 in Mayrhofen , Zillertal ) was an Austrian sculptor from Tyrol.

Career

Last son of Josef Moroder-Lusenberg , he learned his trade in his workshop. In 1919 he married Anna Knottner from Val Gardena and settled in Mayrhofen in the Zillertal. The marriage resulted in two sons, Klaus and Albin , and the daughter Anne Marie. The girl died at the age of 10 weeks. The family adopted a boy named Rudolf Geisler-Moroder , who founded a wood carving school in Elbigenalp in the Lechtal.

In 1916, on the occasion of the centenary of the Tyrolean Kaiserjäger , he made a relief on the subject of "Tyrolean Standschützen", which was presented to the Kaiser on his birthday. In a private audience on September 16, 1916 in Schönbrunn Palace, the emperor gave the artist a gold watch as a thank you.

In 1977 he was awarded the Cross of Honor for Art and Science of the Republic of Austria .

Otto Moroder was called the " Albin Egger Lienz the wood carver" because of his style and motifs .

Works (selection)

The stone pine sculpture Kameradentreueue , created around 1918, is in the Vienna Army History Museum .

In 1964 the forest cemetery was established in Mayerhofen. The large wooden cross in the cemetery chapel was made by the sculptor Otto Moroder.

For the Fatima pilgrimage church in Droß in the Waldviertel he created the miraculous image of the church, a statue of Mary.

In the St. Canisius Church in Berlin, consecrated in 2002, there is a Madonna carved by Otto Moroder in 1943 on the crescent moon , which was saved from a major fire in the previous church in 1995.

He also created a statue of the Virgin Mary for the parish of Zwentendorf an der Donau .
