George W. Bailey (politician)

George W. Bailey Jr. (Born April 6, 1833 in Elmore , Vermont ; † July 17, 1865 Middlesex , Vermont) was an American lawyer and politician who was Secretary of State of Vermont from 1861 to 1865 .

Life

George W. Bailey Jr. was born in Elmore, Vermont, to George W. Bailey and Rebecca Warren. Bailey Sr. was a farmer, served in the British-American War and was President of the Vermont Mutual Insurance Company for many years after the war. Bailey jr. grew up in Elmore and Middlesex. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1858. Bailey worked as a lawyer in Montpelier and as Deputy Secretary of State. He belonged to the Republican Party . When Benjamin W. Dean died in 1861, Bailey was named Secretary of State. He won subsequent elections and was Secretary of State until his death in 1865.

George W. Bailey Jr. was married to Georgiana Reed. After his death Georgiana Reed married the future Vermont Auditor of Accounts E. Henry Powell . Bailey died on July 17, 1865 in Middlesex, his grave is in the Green Mount Cemetery in Montpelier.
