Farrand F. Merrill

Farrand F. Merill (born October 24, 1814 in Montpelier , Vermont , † May 2, 1859 ibid) was an American lawyer and politician who was Secretary of State of Vermont from 1849 to 1853 .

Life

Farrand Fassett Merrill was born in Montpelier, Vermont to Timothy Merrill and Clara Fassett. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in November 1836.

As a member of the United States Whig Party , Merrill was elected to the Vermont General Assembly as a representative for Montpelier, as well as the District Attorney of Washington County . He was clerk in the Vermont House of Representatives from 1838 to 1849 and a member of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1856 to 1857. In 1849 he was elected Secretary of State. He held this office from 1849 to 1853.

Merrill was married to Eliza Maria Wright. The couple had three children. Farrand F. Merrill died unexpectedly of a stroke on May 2, 1859 in Montpelier, Vermont, at the age of 44. It is not known where his grave is located.
