James A. Guest

James A. Guest (born December 25, 1940 in Montclair , New Jersey ) is an American lawyer and politician who was Secretary of State of Vermont from 1977 to 1981 .

Life

James A. Guest was born in Montclair, New Jersey. After graduating from Harvard Law School and ending his visit to MIT for his Woodrow Wilson Economics Fellowship, Guest worked for Senator Ted Kennedy .

Before being elected Secretary of State as a member of the Democratic Party in 1977, Guest served for three years as Commissioner of Banking and Insurance and Secretary of Development and Community Affairs . Guest lost the election as Senator of the United States Senate in 1982. He then chaired various political interest groups. These included Handgun Control Inc., today Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence , as well as Planned Parenthood in Maryland. He was the founding director of the American Pain Foundation. Guest worked as a consumer protection attorney.

In February 2001 Guest was elected President and Managing Director of the Consumers Union , and he is also a spokesperson for Consumers International .

Guest is married to Priscilla Frances Beach. The couple have two children.
