Consumer Reports is the first and largest consumer organization in the world, based in Yonkers , United States , that researches and compares goods and services from different providers. The organization was founded in 1936 under the name Consumers Union .

The organization's task is to inform consumers about their purchase decisions and to advise them independently as well as to educate them about consumer rights.

The financing is mainly done through the contributions of the more than seven million subscribers. There is no commercial advertising in the publications.

Consumer Reports is a member of Consumers International , participates in international comparative product tests as part of the umbrella organization International Consumer Research & Testing (ICRT) and also cooperates with the German Stiftung Warentest .
