Montclair is a township in Essex County , New Jersey , United States . In the 2010 census , a population of 37,669 was recorded. Montclair State University is in the city .
geography
Montclair lies on the first ridge of the Watchung Mountains . According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 16.3 km² , not including water bodies.
history
In the area in which Montclair is located, the Lenape or Delaware Indian tribes lived before European settlement . The first English settlers settled there from around 1666. From 1679 Dutch settlers also acquired land from the Lenape. The place had different names over the years, first Speertown, then Cranetown and finally West Bloomfield as a neighbor of Bloomfield .
In 1856 the was connected to the railway network . In 1860 the place, which had meanwhile become a commuter town, was given the current name Montclair and in 1868 received the administrative status of a township .
Demographics
As of the 2000 census, there are 38,977 people, 15,020 households and 9,687 families in the city. The population density is 2,388.7 inhabitants per km². 59.77% of the population are White, 32.06% African American , 0.19% Native American , 3.15% Asian , 0.04% Pacific Islander , 1.77% Other Ethnicity, and 3.03% Mixed Race. 5.12% are Latinos of various origins.
Of the 15,020 households, 34.3% have children under the age of 18. 47.2% of them are married couples living together, 14.1% are single mothers, 35.5% are not families, 29.3% are single households and 8.6% are people over 65. The average household size is 2 , 53, the average family size 3.16.
25.6% of the population are under 18 years old, 6.6% between 18 and 24, 31.9% between 25 and 44, 24.1% between 45 and 64, 12.0% older than 65. The average age is 38 years. The ratio of women to men is 100: 86.3, for people older than 18 the ratio is 100: 80.7.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 74,894 and the median income for a family is $ 96,252. Males have a median income of $ 64,151 versus $ 43,520 for females. The per capita income for the city is $ 44,870. 5.6% of the population and 3.9% of families live below the poverty line, of which 5.4% are children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 7.2% of the people are over 65.
