The Universum Bremen is a science center with a distinctive experience. Visitors should experience scientific phenomena up close and with all their senses at over 300 exhibits . It is a popular leisure and cultural facility in Bremen .

It consists of the permanent exhibition building, special exhibition building and outdoor area. The whale-shaped permanent exhibition building is an architectural landmark of Bremen. It is a recognized extracurricular learning location .

history

The foundation stone of Universum Bremen was laid in 1996 by professors from the University of Bremen . The project development for the project took place in the Universum GmbH foundation in cooperation with the University of Bremen with various companies. The science center was opened in September 2000 after only a year and a half of construction. It consisted of the 4,000 m² permanent exhibition building with the three areas Expedition Human , Expedition Earth and Expedition Cosmos .

In 2007 the Universum Bremen was expanded to include another building and an outdoor area. Thus there are now three independent exhibition areas in Universum Bremen: the permanent exhibition building, the outdoor area and the special exhibition building, in which there are annually changing special exhibitions.

The company Universum Managementges. mbH operated the universe on a purely private basis until 2013. In 2013 the city of Bremen took over the operation of the cultural institution. As part of this, the main building was modernized and the permanent exhibition was converted. The original "expeditions" have been replaced by the three subject areas of man , nature and technology .

In the first five years since it opened, just under 2.5 million visitors visited the Universum Bremen.

architecture

The main building, in which the permanent exhibition is located, is covered with 40,000 stainless steel shingles and was designed by the Bremen architect Thomas Klumpp . The shape of the building is reminiscent of a mixture of whale and shell.

In contrast to the elliptical contours of the permanent exhibition building, the second building is cube-shaped and surrounded by a partially perforated Corten steel facade. The 5,000 m² outdoor area is a scientific adventure landscape under the open sky with many interactive stations, landscape elements and a 27 m high "tower of the air".

Special exhibitions

Since its opening, Universum Bremen has shown a total of 19 special exhibitions on a wide range of topics. The current special exhibition "The mobile person - your ways. Your decisions. Your future." focuses on the topic of future mobility. Eight interactive themed stations illuminate the phenomenon from different perspectives.
